Be part of Energy Saving Day and do your bit

24 February 2008

Energy Saving Day (E-Day) lasts for 24 hours and will show how even small energy saving measures you make can add up to make a big difference in the fight against climate change.

Everyone who wants to take part in E-Day is being asked to leave off household electrical items, which do not need to be on, and to leave them off for as long as possible.

E-Day is working with the National Grid to calculate the energy saved by leaving items off and you will be able to monitor this on their website.

E-Day starts at 6pm on Wednesday 27 February and finishes at 6pm on Thursday 28 February.

Turning things off is one of the easy things you can do to help fight climate change. There are of course lots of other ways you can do you bit.

Here are our top 5 easy things you can do to permanently lower your footprint:

1. Change your light bulbs to energy saving ones- Switch all the bulbs in your house and save £55 every year too.

2. Insulate your loft – Probably the single biggest thing you can do to improve the energy efficiency in your home.

3. Do an energy efficiency audit – Aside from loft insulation there are lots of other things you can do to reduce your footprint and save money.

4. Wash at 30 – Washing your clothes at 30 degrees uses around 40% less energy.

5. Switch to a green energy tariff – British Gas have just launched the greenest energy tariff in the UK called Zero Carbon.
