SGIO is genuinely concerned about the effects of climate change. As part of Insurance Australia Group (IAG), we have made a public commitment to work towards being carbon neutral by 2012 and were a founding member of the Australian Business Roundtable on Climate Change. IAG was also listed in the World Economic Forums Top 100 Sustainable Companies in 2008.
Global warming has everything to do with our business. It is widely accepted in the scientific community that increased greenhouse gases are impacting global temperatures, which will affect rainfall and drought, and the ferocity and frequency of severe weather events, such as storms and cyclones1.
Given the potential impact of climate change on communities, our business and our customers, SGIO has adopted a business-wide approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in ways that make sense to our people, suppliers, customers and the community. These wide-reaching initiatives are our first measurable steps in helping to reduce carbon emissions, and aim to not only involve, but also educate, key stakeholders. Although part of a long-term journey, these measurable initiatives combine to help reduce the risk of climate change, which we believe, in turn, can reduce the number of insurance claims and help keep insurance affordable for our customers and the community.
